Welcome to Year 1!

A huge 'hello' from Year 1. In our class, we continue to learn in a lot of the ways which we did in Foundation Stage while at the same time getting a little more used to sitting and working at our tables.

We have a real focus on phonics and improving our reading and writing. We also focus on our number skills and explore lots of other topics and interests.

PE DaysPE DaysPE Days

Our PE daya are Tuesday and Thursday.

The days we do PE can change each half term so please make sure PE kits are brought in each Monday and left until Friday. Thank you.

HomeworkHomeworkHomework

Children will bring homework home on a Friday and it is to be handed back in at school by the following Thursday.

Thank you.

Please find below some other things we have been doing this year...

Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic trip to Preston Park Museum.  Here are some of the photos from the day.  A massive thank you to all the parents who came and helped for the day!

During the first half term we have been very busy.  In English we read the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.  The children had great fun acting the story and sequencing it in the correct order.

Our topic was the ‘Great Fire of London’.  The children spent time learning about where the fire started and the diary of Samuel Pepys.  As part of this project the children have designing and making their own 3D model of a Tudor house.

In Science we have been learning about materials and their properties.  We have done scientific testing to see what properties some materials have and also to see which material would be best to make an umbrella to keep us dry.

For the first 2 weeks after half term we are taking a short break from materials to take the opportunity to look at the seasonal changes that are happening now.  We will have made leaf hand prints for our Autumn display and will also be using leaves to print with.

We have had another busy term.  There have been lots of activities going on in school.

The Nativity was a huge success as was the Christmas Art activity afternoon.  We had great fun making peppermint creams as gifts for our mums and dads for Christmas.

The Autumn leaf printing looked fantastic and is displayed in the corridor from year 1 to the hall.

We finally got to finish out models of Tudor houses which all looked fantastic!

We have also had some fun using the Bee Bots to learn about programming in computing although we still need to practise which is left and which is right!

We finished the topic of materials in science and are now able to identify different types of materials.

We have been doing some amazing maths looking at everything from measurements to learning to tell the time.  We have worked together weighing objects to see which is heavier or lighter.  For time we have looked at on the hour and half past.

We have also discovered a passion for ‘Just Dance’ on Youtube.  Year 1 have enjoyed taking part in PE, learning new moves and keeping fit at the same time.  This activity has been enjoyed so much we now have it as an activity for golden time on a Friday afternoon.

We are looking forward to some great lessons in January!  We have started English with the story of Little Red Riding Hood and have already spent time acting and retelling the story.

Maths has started with numbers this term and we have been ordering and writing numbers.
