News November to December 2017

December 2017 - Sportshall Athletics Competition

We took a team of key stage 2 children to the local sportshall athletics competition held at Richmond School. The competitiveness during our running, jumping and throwing events was intense but the work had been put in to training! We managed an outstanding 3rd place finish against some much larger schools - special mention goes to the girls section of our team who performed superbly on the day and were the 'stand out competitors'. December 2017 - Welcome to Motty the Maths Mascot!

We have a new, rather exciting addition to school - Motty the Maths Mascot! He has joined us after we spent some of our PE and Sport Premium on a 'Maths of the Day' initiative which uses the benefits of being active and uses physical activity and maths hand in hand. He has started with a tour of the school...this week in Foundation Stage! Hopefully, he will help us as we start our active maths lessons. Where he will turn up next week?!

November 2017 - Foundation Stage Open Afternoon

To finish off the end of our topic, 'Polar Animals', we invited parents in to join us for an open afternoon where we created polar animal plates. The children thoroughly enjoyed making a range of animals, including; penguins, polar bears, a walrus and a reindeer. We even put on some Christmas music to get us in the spirit- it is the 1st December tomorrow!

Thank you to all parents who were able to come in and help! We can't wait for the 'Christmas Crafternoon'!

November 2017 - Dogs Trust Visit

Dogs Trust came into school to give educational talks to KS1 and KS2 about how to be safe around dogs. The children learnt the correct ways to approach dogs, what to do if a dog is chasing you and we all learnt about dog behaviours and what they mean. A huge thank you to Dogs Trust for providing these talks for us- we all learnt alot!

Maths Stars!Maths Stars!November 2017 - Mega Mathletics!

As a school, we entered the November Mathletics Challenge. The aim was to score as many points as possible in a week with the total for our school being averaged out between the number of pupils. 411 schools took part and we came an AMAZING 13th place! Special mention goes to Year 4 who scored over 250,000 between them during the week...unbelievable! Well done to everyone!

November 2017 - Co-Op Local Good Causes

On a very cold Saturday morning, we went to collect our cheque for £1553.66 from the wonderful people at Catterick Village Co-Op as one of their local good causes. The even better news is that we have been selected again for the next round...please make sure you register your Co-Op card and select us as your good cause. Remember, 5% back for you and 1% back for us!

November 2017 - Children in Need

We had a wonderful turn out in school dressed in our spots and stripes for Pudsy and Children in Need. We managed to raise a magnificent £138.22 - thank you to everyone who contributed!

November 2017 - Key Stage 1 Beamish Visit

Year 1 and Year 2 went on a wonderful trip to Beamish to learn all about olden day toys and how lives have changed since Victorian times. This is part of our topic of 'How have leisure activities changed over time?'. The children all had a workshop where they were taken back in time and they experienced a day in the life of a Victorian school child. We all had a wonderful time - thank you to all parent helpers and also parents who signed up to attend.

Our 'Syddall Soldiers' Remembrance Poppies planted on a roundabout in Richmond. Beautiful.

We will remember.

November 2017 - Special Visitor in Foundation Stage

Our Foundation Stage class had a visit from Cassie, the dog, and Maria. Cassie is a therapy dog who supports and listens to children read in school and also supports people who are unwell at a hospital.

Maria talked with the children about:

  • The different types of dogs there are,
  • How we look after our dogs,
  • What foods they eat and when,
  • What information they have on a collar,
  • Why they wear reflective collars at night,
  • Similarities and differences between dogs and us,
  • How we can look after their teeth,
  • How we should ask permission before stroking dogs we don’t know.

Thanks for coming to visit us!

November 2017 - Friendly Football Matches v Hipswell

On a dark, damp afternoon, we welcomed Hipswell Primary School for our now annual friendly football matches. We had our year 5 and 6 boys and girls footballers in 3 teams and played matches against 3 of their teams for a full afternoon. Our teamwork and attitude were exemplary as well as the football played on the pitch! Overall we won 7 out of 9 of the matches! Well done to everyone involved. Click HERE for full results.

November 2017 - Key Stage 1 Topic Launch Open Afternoon

Our wonderful Key Stage 1 classes launched their new topic by inviting parents in to help them make toys from different times in history. They had great fun creating, cutting, drawing, gluing and finally playing with their new toys! Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, we hope you had a lovely time! :-)

November 2017 - Eco-Gardening Club

Our eco-gardening club have been working hard getting ready for winter. They have been spending some time tidying up around school, making sure everything is sorted and safe as we make our way through autumn. If only those leaves would stay still!

November 2017 - Year 6 Excellent English

‘I heard the wind in above me in the sails. I remember thinking, this is silly, you haven’t got your lifejacket on. You shouldn’t be doing this… I was in the cold of the sea before I could even open my mouth to scream.’ Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

This term our lovely Year 6 class have been reading Michael Morpurgo’s dazzling adventure novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. Following Michael’s journey around the world in The Peggy Sue, Year 6 have been on a voyage of discovery during their English lessons. Writing ship’s log entries, newspaper articles and painting their very own illustrations using quotes from the text, Year 6 have produced some absolutely fantastic work which they should all be very proud of! We can’t wait to see what happens in the next chapter!
